Mallorca (Majorca) has much to offer. The island, located in the Mediterranean, is a place that has been on my list for the longest time. Finally, last year we went on a holiday there for 7 days and had the greatest time. So, here is a Mallorca travel guide on what to do and what to expect when visiting.
When to go and how to reach Mallorca
The periods May-June and September-October are generally recommended for a visit of the island to avoid the crowds in the highly touristic period and the extreme hot weather. We chose the beginning of September to go and there were still a lot of people. The weather was still nice and warm, perfect for the beach.
You can reach Mallorca by plane or by ferry. We chose the plane, of course, since we come from far, but from France or mainland Spain, Mallorca is easy to reach by ferry. On the island we opted for a rental car. The truth is, you definitely need a car (unless if you are not in some kind of an arranged excursion) to get around and to visit the most beautiful beaches on the island.
Mallorca travel guide
1. Cala Llombards
Cala Llombards is a stunning sandy beach on the Southeast coast of the island. It is famous for its turquoise crystal waters. It is close to the residential area Cala Llombards where there some villas and little hotels. It is quite a popular beach in Mallorca and it gets quite crowded in summer. There are sunbeds available but make sure to arrive early to be able to get to one.
It is not only the beach but also the rocks surrounding the bay from where you can jump into the crystal clear waters to swim. I find swimming in the sea a must in the hot summer days.
2. Deia
The second place from this Mallorca travel guide she the town of Deia is considered one of the most beautiful areas in Mallorca. Although it’s quite a small place, the village is really romantic and definitely a must to check out when visiting the island. It is not far from Palma (around 30km) and can be reached by car and by bus. This idyllic place has established a reputation of a millionaires hideaway.
Although Deia attracts many tourists, I must say that I found it quite calm and peaceful. There are several activities you can do there, such as hiking, cycling, checking out the small galleries, sitting at a terrace with a cocktail in hand, or even just walking on the streets. There are also options for fine dining with the famous restaurant El Olivo in the hotel Belmond La Residencia. You also have the possibilities to check out Cala Deia, the small beach in the area where you will be able to find some more places to have a bite.
3. Es Trenc
Es Trenc is another beautiful beach. In fact, it’s the longest beach in Mallorca – 2km long! The beach is not in a proximity of a residential area or a resort. It is actually quite isolated and can be reached by car. Moreover, the beach is located next to a national park, so there is mostly nature around.
There are a couple of cafes on the beach where you can buy drinks and snacks, but it’s not much, so better bring drinks and food yourself. There are no sunbeds or beach umbrellas, so don’t forget to bring your own beach umbrella as well since it get quite hot during the day.
4. Valldemossa
Valldemossa is one of most popular tourist destinations in Mallorca and also one of the most romantic ones. It is a traditional town with charming streets and deserves to be in every Mallorca travel guide. It is famous for being a temporary home of the composer Chopin who lived there for a period of time together with the writer George Sand. However, it is not the only reason why the town is considered so special. The romantic narrow alleys and old houses speak to you while you stroll around.
The town is half an hour drive from Palma and a 20 minutes drive from Deia. We enjoyed a lovely dinner at the restaurant of hotel Valdemossa, having the best table of the whole restaurant with a view of the old town.
5. Sa Calobra
Sa Calobra is the most unique place in Mallorca. Sa Calobra is the name of the village which is situated near an extraordinary beach between two giant rocks. It means “snake” in Catalan. You can get there by car, bike, excursion bus or by boat. We went by car and honestly it was quite of an experience to get there.
Read my post specifically dedicated to Sa Clobra.
