Sa Calobra is one of the most beautiful places on Mallorca island. Although the journey there can be a bit challenging, the place is extraordinary and definitely worth a visit.
One of the places that should be on your list when visiting Mallorca is Sa Calobra. It is one of the most unique places that I have ever visited. But what is this place actually all about?
Sa Calobra is the name of the village which is situated near an extraordinary beach between two giant rocks. It means “snake” in Catalan. You can get there by car, bike, excursion bus or by boat. We went by car and honestly it was quite of an experience to get there.
We left quite early in the morning in order to avoid rush hour on the island and to catch the beautiful morning views when there aren’t still a lot of people. It was the right thing to do. The road to get there is spectacular but not the easiest one to drive on. It is a two-way road that is a bit narrow at some places, so take your time. If you are a junior driver, it’s better toavoid driving there.
On the way to Sa Calobra you can admire the beautiful views. The Coll des Reiss pass is for example a great viewpoint to stop at to get some shots of the mountain area around.
Once you reach Sa Calobra, there is a paid parking where you can leave your car and walk to the beaches. It may be a bit confusing but there are two beaches in the area: Platja de sa Calobra which is the village beach and Platja de Torrent de Pareis – the famous hidden beach between the rocks. You can reach the latter via the tunnels that lead there.
Even if Torrent de Pareis is what you go for to Sa Calobra, don’t forget to enjoy the view from the cliffs and from the tunnels as well! It’s absolutely breathtaking.
Although Sa Caloba is a beautiful place, the huge amount of people that we saw there made a big impression to me. We visited Mallorca in September and still, this place was packed. What we also saw was the number of tourists that are being brought there by excursion buses. The (fast food) restaurants in the area were completely full and there was no place to sit.
This makes me think of sustainability of travel and tourism. The amount of people that visit the place every day in summer can’t be that good for the environment. Sa Calobra is a beautiful place but it’s not big and it seems to me that such crowds are definitely going to have an environmental impact in the future. We need to think more about protecting the gorgeous nature in places like this instead of making a bit more money from buses with tourists. Do you agree with me?
Thank you for reading.
